Pre-Test UPSC relevant
A pre-test is a full field rehearsal of census questionnaires, procedures, apps and training conducted on a sample of areas before the real operation.
For Census 2027, a nationwide pre-test of the Phase 1 (houselisting) methodology covering around 5,000 census blocks was conducted in November 2025 to validate the digital tools and training systems; ORGI published a gazette notification for this pre-test (available in the censusindia.gov.in catalogue). News reports describe a further rehearsal of the Population Enumeration phase from July 1–20, 2026 in 16 States/UTs, in which respondents other than SCs/STs recorded their castes in an open column — testing the first general caste enumeration since 1931 before its 2027 rollout.
