The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India (ORGI), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, is the authority that conducts the Census of India.
The Census Commissioner is appointed by the Central Government under Section 4(1) of the Census Act, 1948 and supervises the entire operation in coordination with States/UTs, working through Directorates of Census Operations in each state. ORGI also maintains the National Population Register. For Census 2027 the office sits atop an administrative pyramid running from the Union Home Minister and Home Secretary through State Chief Secretaries, nodal officers, Principal Census Officers, Charge Officers, supervisors and enumerators.
ORGI publishes the gazette notifications, schedules, instruction manuals (prepared in 19 languages for 2027) and, eventually, all census tables on censusindia.gov.in.
