Supervisor UPSC relevant
A supervisor is the first-line quality-control officer of the census, overseeing a group of enumerators and their blocks within a charge.
Appointed by the State government, the supervisor is 'generally a rank higher to the Enumerators' (official Census 2027 FAQ) and checks coverage and consistency of the enumerators' work, resolves field problems and certifies completion of blocks. In Census 2027 supervision is partly digitised: supervisors and higher officers track enumeration progress and field performance in near real time through the CMMS portal dashboards rather than only through physical inspection of paper schedules.
Supervisors are census officers under the Census Act, 1948, carrying the same public-servant status, confidentiality obligations and legal protections as enumerators. They are counted within the roughly 31 lakh field functionaries mobilised for 2027.
